In order to help Joanna Wilson, (left, in her “before” office), a 25-year-old photographer with a serious home office clutter problem, Peter Walsh, organizing expert and author of Enough Already! Clearing Mental Clutter to Become the Best You, starts off by asking what works. Joanna likes the two, large desks, but admits it’s hard to find things. “There’s software. There’s CDs. The desk gets cluttered fat—stuff explodes all over the house,” she says. Step one? Peter asks Joanna to clear the desk and shelves, grouping like materials together: a stack of blank CDs and binders with backup CDs in one box, billing materials in another. This exercise not only helps Peter’s clients figure out how much space each category requires but shows them the duplicate staplers or outdated equipment they’ve accumulated. As he’s talking, Joanna unearths cords to electronics she no longer owns—and an overdue parking ticket.
The average retrieval time for a piece of paper is ten minutes; 3 percent of all papers are misfiled. One study put the cost to a corporation of recovering a lost file at $120. You can’t afford that. Peter thinks the best file systems are color-coded—we recognize visual cues faster than labels. Joanna likes colored labels and clear folders.
Utilize Wheeled Furniture
“Almost any piece of home office furniture is improved by wheels,” Peter says, (here with Joanna, after the makeover). You can bring a file cabinet (like the one in the bottom left of the photo) out in the morning, then push it under the desk or into a closet at the end of the day.
Peter avoids rolltop desks or office armoires because he feels that anything that can be closed up encourages disorganization. Back Up Your Files
Because 70 percent of business people lose computer data at a cost of about $18 billion a year, Peter recommends his clients invest in a backup system. Joanna chose an external hard drive for her computer (left) (Seagate 1TB Hard Drive, $130; OfficeMax.com); she’ll schedule a regular time every week to back up her files. An off-site Internet service can do the work for you for a price. Peter opts for this labor-free choice with Carbonite.com ($55 per year).
There are a few things in life that have the potential to affect me, and air mattress has lived up to such a capability. Etiquette pros agree that tipping can be awkward, especially in unfamiliar environments.
The number one rule of thumb: When in doubt, tip. But remember to ask if tips are accepted, since there are some establishments that have a “no tipping” policy.
“Let me tell you, they will tell you if they accept tips,” said Jacqueline Whitmore, founder of The Protocol School in Palm Beach.
But you don’t want to blow you entire vacation budget by overtipping, so here’s a cheat sheet:
At the airport
Taxi Driver: 10-15% of the bill and add $2-$3 for every bag the driver helps get in and out of the vehicle.
Private Car Service: 20% of the total, but be sure to check the bill to see if the tip is already included, especially if the car is pre-paid. “If someone else is paying for it, add a tip,” said etiquette expert Elaine Swann. “Go with a dollar amount based on distance: $5 for shorter trips and $10 or more for longer distances.”
Shuttle Drivers: $1-$3 per bag if the driver assists with loading and unloading. If the driver doesn’t help, the experts said it’s acceptable to skip a tip.
Wheelchair assistance/Skycap: $5-$10 for assistance getting through security and to the gate or for plane-side pickup. For skycaps, tip $1-$2 per bag.
At the hotel
Any person that helps with your bags should get tipped $1-$3 per bag, including doormen, bellman and greeters. If a doorman hails a cab, tip $1-$2, said Whitmore.
Housekeeping: $2-$10 a day depending on the quality of service and the hotel. Because staff can vary each day, experts advise leaving a tip daily. If a staff member brings up extra towels late at night or fulfills another request, tip $1-$5. “If someone is coming to your floor that wouldn’t ordinarily be there, give a tip,” said Whitmore.
Room Service: 10-15% of the bill if it’s not already included. “If it is, you can give $1-$5 to the delivery person,” suggested Patricia Napier-Fitzpatrick, founder of the Etiquette School of New York.
Concierge: $10 or more depending on the level of engagement. Scoring hard-to-get reservations or tickets should be rewarded with more, said Napier-Fitzpatrick. There’s no need to tip for dining or activity recommendations.

OSHA’s Walking-Working Surfaces Standard (1910.22(a)) states that all workplaces should be “kept clean and orderly and in a sanitary condition.” The rule includes passageways, storerooms and service rooms. Floors should be clean and dry. Drainage should be present where “wet processes are used.”
Employers should select adequate flooring (e.g., cement, ceramic tile or another material), as different types of flooring hold up better under certain conditions, said Fred Norton, technical director of ergonomics and manufacturing technology for Risk Control Services, Liberty Mutual Insurance in Walnut Creek, CA. Then, develop and implement housekeeping procedures using appropriate cleaners.
“Things like oils and grease – if you don’t use the right kind of cleaning protocols, you’ll just spread slipperiness around rather than getting it up and off the floor,” Norton said.
